The Walking Dead -2×1- What Lies Ahead

So this was a great opener, I thought.

If Shane’s really thinking about defecting, then pouring the water all over himself made sense. Plus it kept with the religious them explored throughout episode: baptism, (possible) zombie pilgrimage and zombies in the church, sins, the monologue at the beginning and the prayers… there was a lot of that going around.

I found it odd that not one of the females opted to carry a gun except when Lori was handed one. I get that Rick/Shane are policeman and have better experience firing guns, but c’mon; teach the women.

I’m looking forward to seeing Andrea develop: she seems to want some semblance of control and she’s not being offered that. Yes she wanted to let herself die at the CDC, but she also did it on her own terms and did not ask a member of the group to kill her. She didn’t steal ammo or weaponry, defect, and off herself. And as she said, her fate was once again taken out of her own hands when Dale stuck around, whereas Shane, Rick, and Dale (to an extent) all get to make all of the decisions for everyone in the group. That particular dynamic is very telling. I'm hoping that another strong female character gets added to the show soon: it can't be all Andrea angst all the time either if they're not going to let her do anything.

Is it weird that I think Lori was absolutely wrong about not letting Carl have a weapon? It struck me as odd that he doesn’t have at least something to protect himself with if he got separated from the group: especially after Sophia ran away. I thought it was because AMC wouldn’t let the writers get away with having the kids involved in anything directly violent scenes but then Carl got shot, so… what the heck?
